Weekly Marketing News, 5th March 2021

This week we’ve seen Sony partner with the ‘Four Lads in Jeans’ to block out haters, Amazon launch cashierless stores and gaming clips app, Netflix create a ‘Fast Laughs’ app and TikTok celebrate Women’s History Month.

What is this?

Each week, Socially Powerful get together and share industry news and what is inspiring us from The World of Social Media, Advertising, Influencer Marketing, Gaming and more…

INDUSTRY NEWS

1. Amazon’s cashierless tech expands to London with first international store

Amazon has opened its first cashierless store outside of the US with a new Amazon Fresh location in London. The store uses the company’s Just Walk Out technology, which allows customers to pick items off shelves and take them out of the store without having to stop and pay a cashier. Billing is handled automatically, but requires customers to scan their Amazon app to enter.

PLATFORM NEWS

2. Twitter looks to get in on the ecommerce boom with new shopping experiments (again)

The growing expectation is that, eventually, everything you see in a video online will be made available for immediate purchase within a few clicks. Last week, during its Analyst Day presentation, Twitter pointed to various new commerce options in development with a new Twitter card type for eCommerce that adds a large ‘Shop’ CTA button (originally tested in 2014!) linking through to a transaction page.

3. TikTok highlights female creators for Women’s History Month

TikTok has announced a range of events for Women’s History Month, which will celebrate both female creators and women-lead businesses on the platform, while also highlighting important initiatives to support women on the platform and female-owned businesses with a new ‘Pass the Mic’ push.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

4. WATCH: Netflix has created a TikTok clone that lets people scroll through funny clips

Netflix is launching a new mobile feature that gives subscribers the opportunity to get their fill of laughs in for the night without having to watch a whole TV show or movie. Fast Laughs looks and feels like TikTok or Instagram Reels. Different short clips — taken from shows play directly within the Netflix app. If one of the shows, films, or specials sparks interest, people can add said title to their saved list to watch later.

GAMING NEWS

5. Amazon’s GameOn app, a platform for sharing mobile gaming clips, launches on iOS

After launching on Android back in November, the company’s mobile streaming centric app has just launched on Apple’s App Store. The app lets users record short clips (anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes) of gameplay from a variety of titles that support screen recording capture. Users can screen record a clip, add commentary or additional edits before publishing to the GameOn platform. The GameOn platform is interestingly fully disconnected from Twitch with separate branding and different channels.

6. Sony signs up ‘The Four Lads in Jeans’ as inspirational ‘poster boys’ for its noise-cancelling headphones

The Brummie friends – composed of Jamie, Connor, Kevin and Alex – became a viral sensation when an image of them stood outside an All Bar One in very tight trousers took the internet by storm. Now, Sony has signed up the lads as the inspirational faces for its WH-1000XM4 noise-cancelling headphones, which allow listeners to block out unwanted noise.
