INDUSTRY NEWS

1. Esports’ popularity ‘only scratching the surface’

With gamers regularly playing for millions in prize money to big audiences (last year, research suggests, 439 million people around the world watched esports events) and talk of younger fans losing interest in traditional sports, one esports boss says it’s time for the old guard to take note. “If traditional companies don’t understand why video games are the largest entertainment industry in the world right now, then there has to be a shift,” says Carlos Rodriguez, CEO and founder of G2 Esports.

2. Everyone on Instagram and Facebook will now have the option to hide their public like counts

Instagram is giving you the option to hide like counts on all posts in your feed as well as on your own posts, so others can’t see how many likes your posts get. The aim of this is to give users more control on Instagram and Facebook so you can focus on the photos and videos being shared, instead of how many likes posts get.

3. Instagram ‘Drops’ feature launched to let users cop product drops:

Instagram is reportedly introducing a new section under the Shop tab that will help customers shop the latest product drops. The new Drops feature in the Shop tab will show users latest products as well as information about coming launches.

4. Nando’s gives 50% off to all over 65s dining with younger friends or relatives

To encourage people to catch up and spend time with their older friends and relatives, Nando’s is offering 50% off the bill (up to £20) for anyone dining with someone over 65. Cleverly re-labelling itself as NanGo’s, the offer will run from June 7-9 and you just need to sign up online to get a code.

5. WATCH: Magnum ice cream and Miley Cyrus collaborate on ‘Miley In Layers’, an immersive virtual concert experience in 8D sound

Magnum ice cream has announced its latest global campaign, Miley In Layers. As part of the campaign, Miley will perform a special virtual concert experience on YouTube, mastered in 8D sound, to show the world her diverse layers. Fans can also purchase limited edition Magnum Bluetooth headphones to get the full 8D sound experience of the performance.

6. Stella Artois teams with grandmaster in Twitch-streamed chess challenge

Stella Artois is hosting a virtual chess challenge with grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura in an effort to capitalise on the cultural relevance of chess, which has seen a lift in popularity over the course of the pandemic. The tie-up will feature Nakamura attempting to break an online record in bullet chess — in which players each have a minute to play a full game — as well as branded prize giveaways including limited edition Stella Artois chess boards and chalices to spectators who comment in the Twitch chat.
