1. Amazon is opening a hair salon in London

Amazon is launching its first high-tech hair salon, as the online retailer makes a surprise move into the beauty sector. The salon, in Spitalfields, east London, will have an augmented-reality mirror showing clients different colours and styles before treatments. The venue will also have magazines loaded on to tablets, for browsing.

2. Product placements may soon be added to classic films

While previously the product had physically be there when the shots were filmed, the advertising industry is now turning to technology that can seamlessly insert computer-generated images. The technological development comes at a time when product placement is ever more important for advertisers, rising 15% in value globally in 2019, according to the PQ Media report. After all, most of us are increasingly streaming films and TV shows via services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, which do not have advertisement breaks.

3. Watch: Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs creates in-house studio and influencer collective

Haus Laboratories, the color cosmetics brand founded by Lady Gaga, has opened up its own content studio in Los Angeles, in partnership with Swedish fintech company Klarna. “The Studio by Klarna x Haus Labs” will now serve a dual purpose: a local hub for Haus Labs and a resource for up-and-coming creators through a newly established invite-only Creator Collective of three people, which will rotate biannually. In addition to studio access, the creator cohort of three people will receive mentorship from the beauty brand and a $10,000 grant provided by Klarna.

4. TikTok sued for billions over use of children’s data

TikTok is facing a legal challenge from former children’s commissioner for England Anne Longfield over how it collects and uses children’s data. The claim is being filed on behalf of millions of children in the UK and EU who have used the hugely popular video-sharing app. If successful, the children affected could each be owed thousands of pounds. TikTok said the case was without merit and it would fight it.

5. How iOS 14.5 is an exciting privacy upgrade for all iPhone users

Apple’s iOS 14.5 is nearly here, along with a game-changing feature that will transform privacy on your iPhone. A new feature, App Tracking Transparency (ATT), that makes it clear which apps are tracking you on your iPhone as you use other apps and visit websites. You will be notified every time an app wants to track you, and you will have to grant permission for it to continue to do so.

6. Watch: Drones light up Shanghai’s sky with a QR Code (that you can scan)

Hundreds of drones took over Shanghai’s night sky on Saturday with a light show that ended with a giant QR code, a symbol of China’s booming digital economy and consumerism. The illuminated QR code, effectively a billboard advertisement in the air, was part of a light show put on by Chinese video-streaming company Bilibili on the first anniversary of the China release of the Japanese role-playing game Princess Connect! Re:Dive.
