2019 was a year full of crazy content and we shared the most popular trends on Instagram and YouTube. Now it’s time to break down the year’s most popular tweets.

For the most discussed TV shows worldwide in 2019, Game of Thrones makes the top of the list, followed by Stranger Things and The Simpsons. Then for movies worldwide, The Avengers: Endgame had the most tweets, followed by Toy Story 4 and the Joker. Avenger’s Tom Holland was the most popular actor worldwide, followed by his co-star Chris Evans and The Greatest Showman’s Zendaya. South Korean boyband BTS was the most popular in terms of musicians worldwide, followed by Ariana Grande and Drake.

Looking at sports, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United interested the users the most. American female soccer player Megan Rapinoe made the top of the females athletes worldwide, followed by former WTA No.1 pro tennis player Serena Williams and Japanese pro tennis player Naomi Osaka. Footballers Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the most talked about on Twitter in 2019. When addressing the top international sports competition hashtags, #UCL ( UEFA Champion’s League), #RWC2019 ( Rugby World Cup) and #CWC10 ( Cricket World Cup) were the most used on Twitter.

#NotreDame, #Brexit and #PrayForAmazonia were amongst the top news-related hashtags worldwide, whilst Donald Trump, Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were the most talked-about politicians in 2019.

On a lighter subject, the top emojis worldwide used on Twitter were the laughing with tears emoji, the crying emoji and the heart-eyed emoji.

But who scored the most popular retweet of 2019?

South Korean boyband BTS’s record on Twitter in 2019 is consistent with the group’s year-round social media engagement. The septet was recently crowned Billboard’s top social artist of the year, dominating the Social 50 chart for two consecutive years now. By early 2020, the group will likely shatter the record for most weeks atop the Social 50 chart, currently held by Justin Bieber.

And while BTS may have snatched the 2019 Twitter crown from World Record Egg, both accounts trail far behind the most retweeted tweet of all time.

The honour belongs to someone else. On January the 5th, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa promised to give 1 million yen to 100 different users who retweeted his message. That would sum up to roughly £7,000. Maezawa’s tweet has earned more than 4.4 million retweets and is now the most retweeted message on Twitter in the platform’s 13-year history.
