Everything You Need to Know About the Metaverse (with Metaverse examples)

The buzzword on every marketer’s lips: Metaverse.
What’s the metaverse? Ideas of the metaverse have been around since 1992, following Neal Stephenson’s idea in the novel Snow Crash. In this metaverse example, avatars explored a virtual metaverse and interacted with each other to escape their dystopian reality.
The first applied metaverse example is Second Life—an immersive, shared world popular in the early 2000s. Created by Linden Labs, Second Life was a virtual world where players could explore new digital horizons and interact with others.
Since then, the concept of a metaverse has developed. While we’re still a way off from a decentralised metaverse, we can provide some metaverse examples to help you understand where the virtual world might end up.
Metaverse Examples to understand the metaverse
Metaverse Examples in Gaming
Fortnite has been hosting metaverse-style experiences for the past few years. Fornite’s concerts have been incredibly popular with both gamers and non-gamers, likely due to the big names headlining the events (including Ariana Grande and Marshmello). While these concerts were Fortnite’s first foray into the metaverse (see the metaverse example video below), Epic Games (Fornite’s developers) has just announced a collaboration with LEGO to help develop a family-safe metaverse. The collaboration has resulted in three key principles that will ensure engaging and safe play:
-
- Protect children’s rights to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority;
- Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first;
- Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.
Roblox is often regarded as an early metaverse example. Roblox is an interactive global game where users can create experiences and play within them as an avatar they have created. Within Roblox, users can pretty much choose to do or be anything they want. This level of freedom gives us a good metaverse example of what the final world will look and feel like.
GTA, while not technically a metaverse, has been metaverse-adjacent for the past few years. GTA has its own currency which players compete to earn, and can spend on in-game virtual properties and vehicles. This idea of buying virtual property with real money (and vice versa) will be implemented in the final metaverse concept.
Metaverse Examples in Pop-Culture
We’ve already mentioned the original coining of the metaverse—Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash—but what are the other metaverse examples available in pop culture?
The most popular, and potentially accurate, comes from Ready Player One. Novel-turned-film in 2018, Ready Player One depicts a metaverse called the OASIS. Accessible through a VR headset and wired gloves, the OASIS is a massive multiple online role-playing game (MMORPG) and virtual society with its own currency. Within the OASIS, users interact through their personal avatars, and work to make a living.
FAQs
What you need to know about the metaverse
The main thing to know about the metaverse is that it will change the way humans interact with each other and brands. In a virtual world, there will be new currencies, new commerce channels, more creative marketing and a whole new world of experiences.
While the final version of the metaverse is still a way off, many brands have already started making the most of metaverse platforms such as Decentraland and Roblox to create exciting and memorable experiences for their audiences. What is an example of a metaverse?
The metaverse’s final form is still a few years from fruition, but there are various metaverse examples that give us a glimpse as to what it will eventually look like.
Examples of metaverses in pop culture include Ready Player One’s OASIS—a virtual metaverse that is accessible through a VR headset and wired gloves.
Another metaverse example comes from Fortnite. Fortnite has been hosting live concerts within the game for the past couple of years. Artists including Ariana Grande, Marshmello and J Balvin have all hosted their own Fortnite concerts that players could attend.
Why is the metaverse important?
The metaverse is important because it will be how we interact with each other in the future. While it might seem like a far-off dystopian future, the metaverse is closer than we think. With huge companies such as Meta, Sony and Lego investing in the development of metaverse technology, the metaverse will completely disrupt life as we know it.
How does the metaverse work?
While we don’t know exactly how the metaverse will work until it’s here, we can expect the metaverse to blur the line between virtual and reality. The final metaverse will be decentralised, meaning it isn’t owned by one single organisation.
The metaverse will involve a digital landscape where users can interact virtually, including socialising with friends and making virtual purchases.
