The Gaming Industry Statistics You Should Know in 2023

The global gaming industry is huge.

The early years

Before we delve in, let’s take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of the gaming industry’s origins so that we can get a true sense of just how large of a gold mine we’re sitting on today.

In 1972, Atari became the first gaming company to set the benchmark for a large-scale gaming community. From here, Atari began to sell the first electronic game ‘Pong’ and arcade machines all over the world began emerging in bars, bowling alleys and shopping malls. The tech-heads of the time knew that Atari was onto something great and a community was created based around this game.

As more and more people bought home computers, their openness to home gaming broadened. These home computers had much more powerful processors than the previous generation of consoles; this opened the door to a new level of gaming, with more complex, less linear games. Once people realised they could connect with each other over networks, multiplayer gaming really took off. 

Where the early 2000s only saw those lucky enough to have good internet connections benefitting from the upcoming gaming industry, the modern era knows no discrimination. Today, 3.2 billion people have access to lightning-speed internet connections and according to the ESA computer and video games industry report of 2015, 1.5 billion of these people use the internet for gaming. 

Video game industry statistics

To address the elephant in the room, revenue in the video games segment is projected to reach US$365.60bn in 2023. From here, it is expected to show an annual growth rate of 7.17%, resulting in a projected market value of US$482.30bn by 2027. 

Other global statistic highlights include:

  1. In the Video Games segment, the number of users is expected to amount to 3,041.3m users by 2027.
  2. User penetration will be 34.5% in 2023 and is expected to hit 38.3% by 2027.
  3. The largest segment is Mobile Games with a market volume of US$315.90bn in 2023.
  4. In global comparison, most revenue will be generated in China (US$105,900.00m in 2023).
  5. The average revenue per user (ARPU) in the Video Games segment is projected to amount to US$137.80 in 2023.

Video game demographic statistics

  1. 79% of gamers in the US are adults
  2. 18-34 year olds make up the largest proportion of gamers at 38%
  3. 64% of adults play video games regularly
  4. 3 in 5 gamers are male
  5. Since 2006 female gamers have made up between 38% – 48% of all gamers, peaking in 2014. 
  6. Males are more likely to purchase video games and in-game content
  7. Female gamers are more likely to buy power-ups and time-savers

Mobile gaming statistics

  1. Mobile gaming is responsible for over half of total gaming revenue
  2. The mobile gaming content market value in North America is believed to have surpassed $25billion
  3. PUBG was the highest-grossing mobile game in 2021, grossing $2.01bn
  4. The second highest grossing mobile game was Honour of Kings, grossing $1.65bn
  5. In 7th was Candy Crush with $856.57million

Home gaming console statistics

  1. Worldwide home console revenue reached $49.2billion in 2021. Here’s a breakdown of annual revenue by platform:

PC = $35.9bn

Console = $49.2bn

Mobile = $90.7bn

  1. There are more than 100 million Xbox Live users worldwide
  2. Playstation Plus users are expected to reach 50 million
  3. The Nintendo Switch has sold over 114 million units

Esports growth statistics 

  1. Annual global Esports revenue is now over $1billion
  2. The world’s top Esports events have prize pools exceeding $30 million
  3. The global Esports audience is expected to exceed 500 million by 2024
  4. Several Esports organisations are worth over $100 million

People have been playing video games since the 1970s, however, it’s fair to say that things have come a long way since Pong was introduced to the world.
