How Much do YouTubers Make a Year? Top Earners of 2023

It is no secret that the internet has become a popular way for people to make money, pronto.

Today, 70% of kids say they are more connected to YouTubers than traditional celebrities so it’s no wonder that over 52% of children between the ages of 6-17 aspire to become a YouTuber.

But how can you make YouTube your source of income and, more importantly, how much do YouTubers make?

We’ll walk you through just how much YouTubers can potentially earn by shining a light on the top earners of 2023. However, we must preface this by stating that the figures we will discuss are reserved for the small, elite group of YouTubers on the platform who make such extraordinary money. The average YouTuber will make just a fraction of this, but oftentimes even this is enough for many to live comfortably.

Ways that YouTube pays

Just because your subscriber count isn’t in the millions, it doesn’t mean you can’t still monetise your channel.

To set your account up for monetisation, you will need to do the following:

  1. Enable your account for monetisation: there is a monetisation option that you can tick in your YouTube account
  2. Connect your channel to an adsense account: either create a new adsense account or attach your new channel to an existing one that you have
  3. Review video criteria and ad formats: you can only monetise what YouTube considers to be ‘advertiser-friendly’ content, so any videos you want to charge for must be compliant with guidelines and copyright laws. You must also choose which ad types you want ie, skippable video ads, display ads, overlay videos etc.
  4. Set up the videos to monetise: you will need to individually go into each video to set it up for monetisation and choose your ad types.
  5. Wait for YouTube to review your channel: after doing this, YouTube will check that everything is in order and approve your channel for monetisation

There are several other ways to cash in your cheque through YouTube without solely relying on millions of views and subscribers. These are:

  1. Ad revenue: earn revenue from watch page ads and Shorts feed ads
  2. Channel memberships: members can make recurring monthly payments in exchange for special perks that you offer
  3. Shopping: fans can browse and buy items, such as merch, from your YouTube shop
  4. Superchat & Superstickers: fans can pay to get their messages or animations highlighted in chat streams
  5. Super Thanks: fans can pay to get their messages highlighted in the comments section
  6. YouTube premium revenue: get part of a YouTube Premium subscriber’s fee when they watch your content

Do bear in mind that each of these features come with their own set of eligibility criteria which you must meet to be able to cash in on your YouTube content.
