Social Media Updates: October 2022

A new month means new platform updates. What are the key social media updates you need to be aware of?

TikTok Updates

TikTok launches education platform

TikTok is finally launching its education platform TikTok Academy, which aims to level up marketing strategies on the platform.

Aimed at “everyone from the most junior to the most senior experience levels”, TikTok Academy is a free-to-access virtual learning environment with 2 key curriculums: the 101 course and the small business course. A third course focused on commerce is to be released soon.

TikTok’s new Smart Performance Campaign ad solution

TikTok’s newest ad solution, Smart Performance Campaign, is an end-to-end automation tool for advertisers.

Although still in the testing phase, Smart Performance Campaign helps advertisers set up for campaigns whilst keeping manual steps to a minimum. You’ll need a marketing objective, budget, country, and creative assets to get started.

TikTok Profile Kits

TikTok has partnered with Linktree to create the TikTok Profile Kit. Using a secure log in, creators connect their TikTok account to a Linktree to highlight their TikTok profile by displaying up to six videos on Linktree.

Creators can display their latest or most popular videos, or manually select the ones to highlight.

Instagram Updates

Instagram introduces native scheduling

Instagram has made content planning a whole lot easier with a new native scheduling feature within the app. Those with access can schedule a new post in the creation flow under “Advanced Settings”. Reels can be scheduled in the same way.

Add multiple links in your bio

You can now add multiple links to your biography, all with customizable titles. Currently, it seems there are no restrictions on domains you can link to.

Only the first link shows up on Instagram profiles as a preview. Users need to tap the ‘+’ prompt in order to see a full list of all links. Native support for multiple off-platform links means you can direct followers to key landing pages without using third-party tools.

Twitter Updates

Elon Musk finally takes over Twitter

After months of back and forth, Elon Musk has officially bought Twitter after closing the $44bn deal with the platform. Musk hopes to make Twitter the “most respected advertising platform in the world”, adding that users should choose their experience according to their preferences.

He also stated that Twitter ads should be as relevant as possible to the needs of the viewer, arguing “low relevancy ads are spam, but highly relevant ads are actually content”.

Host Community-only Spaces

Twitter is testing a new update for Communities that allows admins and moderators to host exclusive Spaces.

Anyone on the platform can see and join a Space started in Communities, but only members of that Community can reply to the Space.

YouTube Updates

YouTube creates separate pages for Shorts, livestreams and long-form videos

YouTube has announced it’s separating Shorts, livestreams and long-form videos on all channel pages.

The introduction of dedicated tabs makes it easier for viewers to discover the content they’re most interested in when exploring a user’s Channel.

YouTube introduces Channel handles

YouTube has introduced Channel handles as a unique identifier for its users. Every channel will have its own unique handle that other users can tag in comments, community posts and video descriptions.

If a channel already has a personalised URL, this will automatically become their default handle. You can change the handle as soon as you receive the notification in YouTube Studio.
