Social Media Marketing News
The social media landscape is an ever-changing one. All social media networks have undergone major shifts in the last five years alone, altering important demographics and changing the way they perform in the online world. Understanding your platform and YouTube statistics can help you keep up with the consumer shifts.
As a marketer in 2023, monitoring these changes is crucial to the success and longevity of your brand. Knowing who frequents your preferred platform, how they use it and what they use it for is key to creating impactful and rewarding marketing campaigns.
We’ve previously covered Facebook statistics over here at Socially Powerful, but for those of you whose chosen social media platform for marketing is YouTube, then you’re in luck. We will be running through the top YouTube statistics that we believe every marketer should know about, focusing primarily on users, usage and marketing ads.
YouTube user and demographic statistics
As a marketer, it is wise to be present on the platform your target audience frequents most. That’s why it’s important to understand its user and demographic statistics, just in case you’re the perfect match.
India has the most YouTube users
With an estimated 225 million users, more people use YouTube in India than in any other country. The US comes in second place, with 197 million.
As for the UK, 43 million people use YouTube here.
YouTube’s user base is predominantly male
56% of YouTube users are male, making 44% female. These YouTube statistics are a clear indicator that anyone can create content on the platform if they so wish.
The largest age group to use YouTube are 15-35 year olds
About 77% of internet users between the ages of 15-35 use YouTube, along with 73% of 36-45 year olds, 70% of 46-55 year olds and 67% of 56+ year olds.
The platform’s popularity with Gen Z makes total sense, seeing as it houses the likes of Emma Chamberlain and David Dobrik.
English and Spanish are among the most popular languages used on YouTube
More than 60% of content created through YouTube’s top 250 channels is in English, followed by Spanish (15%) and Portuguese (7%).
YouTube users are more likely to have a university education
A study by Nielsen found that those who use YouTube are more likely to be educated at a higher level.
YouTube usage statistics
Next, let’s dive into some YouTube statistics that cover usage. Here we’ll look at stats that tell us things like who is using the platform and how long they’re using it for.
There are 2.56 billion monthly active YouTube users worldwide
The platform is visited by roughly a quarter of the world’s population every month. Of this 2.56 billion, 177 million of them are daily active users. They are some rather impressive YouTube statistics if you ask us!
Children in the UK spend approximately 59 minutes per day on YouTube
In 2021, children between the ages of 11-18 spent over 50 minutes per day on the YouTube app. This number has since increased to 59 minutes. We use the word ‘app’, as tablets and mobiles are the most popular device options among children in the UK.
40.9% of watch time happens on a mobile
Along similar lines, there are multiple ways to watch YouTube videos – on a desktop, TV, tablet etc – but 40.9% of watch time is done on a mobile device. This is because it is easier for people to watch videos on-the-go.
Having said that, TV screens are YouTube’s fastest growing screen size, as YouTube watch time nearly doubled between 2019 and 2020, with over 120 million people watching per month.
YouTube Shorts has over 1.5 billion monthly active users
In addition, it earns more than 30 billion daily views, accumulating over 5 trillion views thus far.
People watch over 1 billion hours of YouTube content every day
If you’re looking for YouTube statistics that will both shock and impress, you’ve come to the right place. Not only is YouTube’s user base large, but it is also engaged, earning it such a surreal watch time.
YouTube marketing statistics
With such a large user base, YouTube is a very effective channel for marketing your business. This is why YouTube influencer marketing is so huge. Brands can run ads organically through influencer content, as well as increase awareness and generate conversions and engagement.
70% of viewers have made a purchase after seeing a brand on YouTube
Google states that 70% of viewers have bought from a brand that they’ve seen on YouTube. This tells us just how efficient the platform can be when it comes to driving conversions.
Pre-roll, skippable ads are said to be the most effective
Ads can be placed anywhere within a video, beginning, middle and end. Ads can also be skippable or non-skippable. According to a study conducted by Statista, 29% of respondents feel that pre-roll, skippable ads are the way to go. On the other hand 7% of respondents feel that non-skippable ads are more effective.
On a similar note, consumers find YouTube ads to be more relevant than TV advertising.
YouTube generated $7.9billion in ad revenue in Q4 of 2021.
Ads such as Amazon Alexa’s minute-long Big Game ad, which features SNL star Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, are those that are contributing to YouTube’s large revenue turnovers.
You can combine all of these YouTube statistics with your channel specific metrics to create a blueprint for success in 2023.
