Embracing Fear

Regret, failure, threat, the unknown, disappointment, ridicule, rejection. I guess we could all think of a situation where we’ve felt these emotions? We’ve all heard people say or have said ourselves “It’s not the right time” or “I wish I’d done it” I want to talk about why fear is a positive thing and why people should learn to embrace it.

“You are very powerful, provided you know how powerful you are.”

Fear can be destructive, disruptive, challenging and it holds us back from doing things we want to do. For most of us, fear is present on a regular basis and is constantly changing from everyday decisions to something that can change our lives. What separates people is the ability to act in the face of fear and harness it into a positive emotion.

“Know that where there’s fear, there’s power. “

Fear is an emotion that we use to preserve our lives, by preventing ourselves from doing things that might cause harm, disappointment or rejection. People’s biggest fear is usually failure. Simply, it could be applying for a new job, people don’t because they fear being rejected. Or a 16 year old taking their GCSE Maths exam and if they fail, they fear their life is over because their teachers have drilled it into their minds.

To harness the power of fear, you need to recognise fear. You’ll always have fears, admit it and understand the steps to dismantle it, face your fears head on and overcome them. Take action, write your fears down and understand what’s holding you back, build your courage and develop the self belief that you can overcome them.

If you want to apply for that dream job, don’t hold back because you don’t think you’ll get it and make up an excuse for why you shouldn’t, believe in yourself and do it! What’s the worst that could happen? Fears tend to be worse than the reality and never be afraid of someone saying no.

Realise that not everything you do in life is going to work out. Not every song that’s ever been written has sold millions of records. People do it because they want to, because they care, because they believe in themselves! Just because their last song failed, doesn’t mean the next one won’t be their big break!

Embrace fear, don’t hold regrets, take a chance, don’t be scared of the unknown and never be afraid of failure! The most fascinating thing for many, is that they aren’t afraid of failure, they are afraid of the success.

Life is an adventure, experience everything!
