SP Diaries #4: Ella Proctor, Digital Content Manager

Making sure the agency’s digital channels are up to scratch and performing well is no easy feat.

Keeping track of social analytics, creating content, liasing with the paid team, and writing blogs are just some of the many tasks Digital Content Managers do every day. Sound like a lot? It is!

For Ella Proctor though, that’s just a Monday.

We chatted to Ella to find out more about how she found Socially Powerful, and what exactly her hectic role entails.

Read on to find out more.

When did you start working at SP?

I started working at Socially Powerful in January 2021 as a Content Writer.

What is your role?

I’m a Digital Content Manager.

What does that entail?

My role is a mix of creative, insight, and analysis. I manage the content team at Socially Powerful, so it’s a group effort, but I ensure the smooth running of the social media channels, newsletters, and the Socially Powerful blog, and respective reporting and strategising.

What does an average week look like for you?

My weeks are usually varied, which keeps things interesting. Managing the content across social and the blog means I’m constantly on the lookout for trending topics across most industries so it’s never boring. Planning content for the website involves SEO keywording and keyword research, and plotting outlines that offer value to readers. There’s a fair amount of strategy planning and filming for the social channels, which is a lot of fun. We also run monthly newsletters, and I oversee the awards submissions for the agency.

Why did you choose SP/ want to work for them?

I wanted an opportunity to continue developing my writing skills, and Socially Powerful offered an incredible opportunity to do so. I loved the energy of the website, and the clients we had at the time.

What do you like about working at SP?

I’ve been very lucky at Socially Powerful as I’ve been able to carve my own role. The focus on personal growth and development is amazing and I’ve learnt so much in my time here. The people are also fantastic.

What do you like about working within this industry?

I like the changing day-to-day. While overall tasks remain the same, it’s different on a granular level so I’m always learning. It also stops me from getting too comfortable because there’s always something I could be getting better at.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned across your career so far?

Just relax. You’re not going to be working your best when you’re stressed or panicked, so take a step back, go for a walk or just take a five minute break. When you come back you’ll have a new perspective and a clear head.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve overcome at SP?

Imposter syndrome. I joined SP as a COVID graduate, so going from chilling in lockdown to running a website and social channels was a bit of a brutal wake up. For a long time I felt I wasn’t qualified for the role, but that’s when you just reflect and realise what you’ve done to get where you are.

How has your career path/vision changed over the years?

I used to want to go into global PR, but hated the phone calls. So, I went the total opposite and pursued a purely written-based role. I love writing and planning, and making content in general. I’ve been able to hone a lot of skills at SP, which I’m very grateful for. As for the future, who knows?

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your role?

Ask questions if you need help, but give it a go yourself first. That goes for whatever you’re doing. There’s no shame in asking for help, but if you give something a go yourself first you’ll get a foundation of understanding so you’ll be able to ask questions that give you a deeper understanding.
