What Is Mormon MomTok Really Teaching Us About The Nature Of TikTok Communities?

In the ever-evolving world of social media, TikTok has become more than just a platform for viral dances and catchy sound bites—it’s home to a vast range of niche communities where users bond over shared interests, experiences, and cultures. These micro-communities, from BookTok to ASMRtok, create spaces where people can connect on a more personal level, breaking free from mainstream trends and diving deep into specific subcultures. With TikTok’s unique algorithm that serves content tailored to individual preferences, it’s easier than ever for these communities to grow rapidly and thrive.

One such TikTok micro-community that’s recently gained attention is “Mormon Momtok,” a subset of moms who create trendy videos, often sharing aspects of their daily lives and faith. While some of these videos touch on Mormon teachings, the real reason people are so captivated by Momtok goes beyond religious lessons. Instead, much of the fascination stems from the drama and personal stories that have unfolded within the community, sparking curiosity and debate.

Is the interest in this subgroup of Momtokers really about learning more about the Mormon way of life, or are viewers more drawn in by the scandals and gossip that have played out publicly?

Read on to dive deeper into what Momtok is truly about and how the scrupulous nature of TikTok communities dictates its image.

Moreover, TikTok communities can amplify voices that may have been overlooked, raising awareness about various cultures, lifestyles, and social issues. This inclusivity not only enriches the user experience but also promotes empathy and understanding among diverse audiences. Ultimately, TikTok communities harness the power of connection, enabling individuals to unite, share, and celebrate their uniqueness while fostering a sense of global camaraderie.

What is Momtok? Let’s Start at the Basics

The simple #Momtok has been used on tiktok over 5.6M times. The term refers to a TikTok community where mothers share content centered around parenting, family life, and the everyday experiences of motherhood. This content ranges from parenting tips and advice to funny, relatable moments, household hacks, and personal stories about balancing life as a mom.

Like many Tiktok communities, Momtok stands out as a supportive environment where moms can connect over shared challenges, celebrate small victories, and build a sense of community. While some members use humor and trends to engage their audience, others may focus on more serious discussions about mental health, relationships, and raising children.

Momtok serves as a digital space where moms can find both practical advice and emotional support, while sharing their unique journeys with a broad audience.

So How Do Mormonism and Momtok Co-exist?

For those who might not be caught up on the religion, Mormonism, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), is a Christian faith that emphasizes family, community, and living a moral life in accordance with God’s commandments. Women in Mormonism are encouraged to focus on motherhood and nurturing, playing essential roles in raising children and supporting family life.

For those curious to learn more, simply searching “Mormonism” on TikTok can lead you down an unexpectedly entertaining rabbit hole.

However, the famous Mormon Momtok that we know and love, officially took off in January 2022, when a key figure in the community, Taylor Frankie Paul, along with three other Mormon mothers, began posting attention-grabbing, clickbait-style videos under #Momtok.

This niche TikTok community of Mormon moms, all based in Salt Lake City, Utah, share snippets of their daily lives, offering a mix of parenting advice, lifestyle content, and of course trendy dances and hilarious memes often mocking their religion. What supposedly sets this community apart is its blend of relatable, wholesome family moments and the unique cultural lens of Mormonism, which often informs their content.

However, the fun, family-oriented community quickly took a sharp turn when five months after the launch of #Momtok Paul took to TikTok to discuss the “soft-swinging” scandal that took place with the group.

While this may seem detrimental to a group of women within a religion that preaches loyalty and faithfulness, this was just the beginning for this subgroup of Momtok, as their fame would soon explode with the creation of the Hulu original series, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

While we can go on and on about the drama within Momtok, which if you are not caught up we highly recommend, the whole franchise that now surrounds Momtok begs a much larger question about the power of TikTok communities: do they really bring people together? Or are they just a source of entertainment for the average TikTok user?

The Double-Edged Sword that is Social Media Fame

As seen with the rising fame of Momtok and their trending show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, there have been both positive and negative impacts of social media as the show has brought in more and more attention to the community.

On the one hand, these TikTok communities allow people to find their tribe, bond over shared interests, and even raise awareness about diverse lifestyles and cultures. Yet, this exposure comes at a cost. The more popular a show or community becomes, the more open it is to public scrutiny and negativity.

Can Tiktok Communities Survive this Scrutiny?

These communities can foster positive connections, but the nature of social media makes it difficult to shield members from the harmful effects of fame. Once content is in the public eye, it’s nearly impossible to control the narrative. Throw religion into the mix, and creators open themselves up to an entire new level of scrutiny from those who don’t understand or may never agree with their beliefs, adding another layer of complexity and inviting criticism that goes beyond personal actions and into deeply held values.

For now, TikTok communities like Mormon Momtok must navigate the delicate balance between celebrating their unique stories and managing the potential fallout of viral success, particularly within a religion that places significant value on a “traditional” household. Notably, this group of moms has been quick to highlight the noticeable shift in their family dynamics, with many women stepping into the role of primary breadwinners.

There are definitely ways in which TikTok communities can combat the negative side effects that come with social media fame. TikTok does have moderation tools like comment filters and blocklists that can help brands and creators to manage the backlash they face in their comment sections.

Specific to Mormon Momtok, Taylor Frankie Paul is known to delete negative comments, especially those related to her personal life and family dynamics, to maintain a positive environment.

Despite the challenges, Tiktok communities continue to thrive, whether that be through the power of connection or the allure of controversy. As Momtok navigates this complex landscape, it highlights the delicate balance between authenticity and public perception in the ever-evolving world of social media.
