We caught up with fashion influencer @yourstylistgab to talk all things red carpets, fashion houses, and personal style. Read on to discover how this fashion commentator is leveraging social media to promote her style.

Where does your love for fashion and styling come from?

Fashion is literally the only industry I have ever wanted to be in. I never dreamed of being a doctor, princess or President. It was always fashion. It has always been fashion. I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to be, whether it be a buyer, designer or stylist until recently. But the love was from day one.

How has the increase in fashion brands on social media impacted the opportunities/brand deals you receive?

I have declined many opportunities due to fast fashion just being something I cannot promote. The influx of brands makes it difficult to see who is quality and who isn’t these days but I’ll always stick to quality fashion no matter the name.

Which platforms do you predominantly use? Which do you prefer for posting, and which for community building?

TikTok is where I have my largest following and where I show my personality the most in regards to fashion. Instagram is where you get to actually see my style in action.

How does community engagement vary on your chosen platforms?

Engagement can be tricky. Sometimes you have to understand it isn’t you or the post, but the algorithm. I can have a video that has 1 million views and the next one could get 1,000. Just keep posting.

What is your favorite type of content to create, and which works best for your audience? Is there a juxtaposition?

I like voiceovers. You can focus on capturing a quality video and worry about talking later. I often make myself laugh so it’s also a fool proof way in making sure I don’t mess up capturing a quality video or photo.

In your own words and experience, how would you define “influencer marketing”?

I think we are all influencers. Whether you consider it your job or not, if you can be convincing about a product, come across authentically, you’re going to influence. Social media as a whole is influencer marketing now.

Why do you think influencer marketing is so powerful in today’s society?

We want real people connecting with us. We don’t want to feel like everyone is “paid” and that’s why they’re promoting something. When I’m talking to my followers about products they know I’ll always be honest and honesty is powerful.

Do you have experience working with brands? How do you decide which brands you would like to work with?

I have worked with and have current partnerships with a few. It always goes back to quality for me, that’s how I choose who to work with.

How do you foresee the influencer marketing space changing within your niche in the next 12 months?

We are steering away from “rich” influencers who can buy without having to have style. We are going to see authentic fashion creators that have style that isn’t reliant on the “name”.

Based on your experience, what would you advocate to change about the fashion industry?

Fakes. I cannot stand fakes. I wish more emphasis was placed on textiles versus a name.

How do you balance your online and offline lives?

My “online” life, funny enough, doesn’t really impede my day to day. They’re really two completely different worlds. I also believe looking at it that way is how I keep my sanity. The internet is not the real world.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

On a red carpet asking your favorite celebrities “why did you wear that?”

What is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self when starting out as a fashion influencer?

Start early. Take yourself seriously because you can do it.
