Socially Powerful interviewed hair influencer Hannah Beau (@hannahbeauc) to discuss her curly hair journey and the impact of influencer marketing. Hannah started sharing her haircare experience after cutting off damaged hair, and received overwhelming support from her followers which helped her grow a community. She focuses on creating authentic content by sharing curly hair tipsand personal growth updates. Hannah prioritizes working with brands she personally trusts, as she believes influencer marketing thrives due to its authenticity. Hannah hopes to help more people embrace their curls unapologetically and dreams of launching her own hair care brand.

Hannah Beau @hannahbeauc

We caught up with Hannah Beau, AKA @hannahbeauc. Hannah has accumulated 184.5k followers and 12.1M likes on TikTok by sharing her hair/curl-care journey. She aims to help others who find themselves in similar situations to her, with the ultimate goal being to inspire them to love their curls unapologetically.

Check out the interview below!

1. Tell us about your background and how you started to build your following.

I’m from Manchester in the UK and from a young age I have loved the idea of reaching younger generations and helping them in any way I could, with the aim of giving back. This initially came through as teaching, leading me to study education at university but it didn’t feel completely right for me. My TikTok videos blew up as a complete surprise to me, almost overnight and I saw an opportunity to help people on an even larger scale than I could’ve ever thought. I realised there was no one that looked like me growing up for me to look up to so I decided to become that person for other mixed girls learning to care for their curls.

2. Which platforms do you predominantly use? Which is your favourite?

I only use TikTok and Instagram for my social media work but TikTok has to be my favourite! It’s my main reach to my audience, Instagram feels more personal to my friends and family but I still keep it public for my followers to have an insight into my life outside of TikTok and hair content.

3. What type of content do you create, and which type works best for your audience?

I mainly create hair content, specifically curly hair videos showing people which products work best for my hair type, lessons I’ve learnt in taking care of it and updating my followers on my hair growth journey from cutting it off over a year ago.

I think the growth updates and chatty videos I create work best as they’re the most natural and ‘me’. They aren’t super planned out and recorded usually on a whim which gives a natural, authentic feel. People became so invested in my hair growth as it was such an emotional process that a lot of people resonated with so they love the updates of how far i’ve come and it helps others with the confidence to start their curly hair journey too. My favourite messages from my followers are them sharing their hair journeys with me and explaining how my videos pushed them to do so. It warms my heart!

4. At what stage did you learn to fall in love with your curls and how to maintain them?

Unfortunately not until I was 21! I posted a TikTok video trying to care for my curls that were already too damaged from bleaching and heat damage to curl anymore. The video blew up and the advice and support from TikTok pushed me to take the leap, chop the damage off which left me with 2 inches of hair and start again! I researched curly hair care and every comment from the beautiful people on TikTok who took the time to help me.

5. How would you define “influencer marketing”?

I’d define influencer marketing as authentic, natural advertising. It comes from a more honest place than a board meeting of professionals using tactical methods in advertising, using actors and heavily edited adverts to display their products. Hearing someone who could be your neighbour recommend a product and show real results feels much more personal and authentic.

6. Have you worked with brands before? How do you decide which brands to work with?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with a lot of brands that I’ve used and loved for years! I only work with brands whose products I have tested or if I know them well as a consumer. The brands I work with have to fit within my brand of hair care and womanhood also, if it doesn’t make sense for my brand then it doesn’t make sense for my audience!.

7. How do you think influencer marketing will change over the next 12 months?

I think it’ll just grow and grow! Brands are noticing the impact influencers are having on a new wave of younger consumers. Products can be sold out in seconds from one influencer talking about it in a video. It’s a powerful marketing tool and I can’t see it slowing down anytime soon.

8. How has influencer marketing changed since you began working within social media?

I started posting videos on YouTube at 13 and stopped at 18. During that time, being an influencer wasn’t a thing! It would just be normal people posting videos for fun about a product they just bought on a shopping trip. It was strange to watch people’s hobbies turn into a career as their followings grew. Like Zoella, her videos were just shopping hauls and beauty tutorials from her bedroom, rapidly she was selling out products and creating high production videos and I would even say she paved the way for British influencers!

9. Do you use any software to help create and edit your content?

I like to use iMovie and CapCut for videos that are more difficult to edit or are for brands as you can be more precise with your editing and effects, making higher quality content. Most of the time for my TikToks I will use the app itself and the editing tools on there as I like to keep my videos as natural feeling as possible. I literally prop my phone up, press record and wing it! It feels natural to me and I enjoy it more than a detailed planned video and I think my audience feels the same.

10. How do you balance your online and offline lives?

I’ve been able to balance them easily so far! If I don’t tell people about my social media I’m just another normal person to them so don’t get treated any differently. I’ve recently started to get noticed in public which is really strange especially if I’m with my family and friends because they don’t see me as an influencer, they see me as their friend or family member so seeing their faces when someone comes up to me knowing me from TikTok always makes me laugh. It’s still strange for me but I absolutely love meeting people. Seeing them happy to see me makes me feel like I’m doing something right!

11. Which influencers inspire you?

I have a few TikTokers that I follow and love their content. @keishatahirih and @court.willis have been so supportive of me through my curly hair journey. As two other curly content creators, their content inspires me and gives me ideas for my own videos. I love seeing them thrive on their channels and help people in the same way I do. They are from Canada and the US and as I’m from the U.K. we are able to reach curly girls around the globe and I love how much of a tight community the curly girls are!

12. Where would you like to take your career as an influencer?

I would love to grow my platform and reach more people so I can help more people love their curls and contribute to stopping the microaggressions against curly hair. The more people I can reach the better! I’d also love to have my own hair brand one day as I’ve tried and tested sooo many curly products. I know how hard it can be to find affordable products that work on natural curls. Making an accessible, aesthetically pleasing range that works for curly girls would be a dream! Career goals I’d like to reach would be being the face of a hair brand as I never see anyone that looks like me with my texture of hair in the media, that would be amazing.
